Yes, this is tricky! The best way to think of it is to imagine turning the nipple of the spoke with a screwdriver inside the rim/tire. It turns clockwise to tighten in, and counter-clockwise to loosen it. Use your spoke wrench on the nipple, but always reference your direction from the tire side.
